It is a fundamental part of your game. Dirt and debris stuck in your clubs will affect the spin rate of the ball.
That is why it is important to have clean grooves, which help you generate the optimal spin needed for control and for better contact with the ball.
The ball reacts more positively off a clean surface. In this comprehensive guide, we will show you how to clean golf clubs through a step-by-step process.
Things we will cover include how to clean, remove dust, and polish your clubs to ensure that they remain in top condition.

Step-by-Step Process on How to Clean Golf Clubs
Here is a well-explained step-by-step process on how to clean your clubs using the above tools. Ensure not to add anything corrosive into the cleaning components:
Step One: Prepare the Cleaning Solution
The first step of cleaning your golf clubs is to prepare a cleaning agent in a bucket or basin.
Fill the basin or bucket with smart water and add a few drops of mild soap, and then mix it to create a soapy mixture.
Be sure not to use hot water, as it can loosen some components of the clubs, like ferrules.
Step Two: Soak the Clubheads
Once the cleaning solution is ready, you can now immerse the iron heads in the solution and leave them to soak for a few minutes.
Doing this will help to loosen dirt and grime on the surface of the clubs.
The only caution that you need to observe is that the ferrules should not be submerged to prevent any damage.
Step Three: Scrub the Clubheads
The real cleaning will happen after the clubs have fully soaked.
To do so, use a soft-bristle brush or an old toothbrush that you are no longer using to scrub the club heads.
Be careful when cleaning all areas, especially the grooves, as most dirt will accumulate there.
As for the drivers and woods, consider using a damp cloth to wipe the head instead of using the brush. This will minimize scratching.
Remember to clean the shafts too after cleaning the clubheads because they are also prone to dirt.
You do so using a damp cloth, just as you would with clubheads. The same applies for club grips, as they can easily get dirty and worn from sweat.
Step Four: Rinse and Dry
After removing all the dirt from your clubs, you can now rinse them with clean water. The importance of rinsing is to remove any soap residue.
Once you are through with the rinsing, you can dry the cleaned components of your clubs using a soft towel to prevent rusting.
Ensure that the shafts, clubheads, and grips are completely dry before storing the clubs.
How to Clean Golf Clubs with Rust
If your clubs have developed rust, it is important to address them before they spread to all parts of the club. Here are the exact steps for removing rust from golf clubs:
Step One: Apply Vinegar
First, soak a clean cloth in white vinegar and then wrap it around the rusted sections of the clubs.
Leave it wrapped for a few hours to ensure all the rust is removed.
Sometimes, it may be necessary to keep it wrapped overnight to remove stubborn rust.
Apart from this, some people prefer using a mixture of vinegar and baking soda.
Step Two: Scrub with Steel Wool
After giving time for the vinegar to penetrate the rust, you can now scrub the rusted surface with fine steel wool.
When cleaning observe good care by not brushing them too much as it may cause scratches on the shiny parts of the club.
Step Three: Rinse and Dry
Once again, you need to rinse the cleaned clubs in clean water and dry them with a clean towel.
While doing so, ensure no moisture removal to prevent unwanted rusting. Also apply a protective coating to prevent further rusting. We will discuss how to do this below.
How to Polish Golf Clubs
After doing a thorough cleaning of your golf clubs, you need to make them shine again and protect them from future dirt.
The best way to do that is to polish your clubs. Here is the process of how to polish golf clubs:
Step One: Apply the Polish
After removing all the dirt from your clubs and drying them, you can now apply the polish. The process is straightforward.
You just apply a small amount of metal or chrome polish to the surface of the club using a soft cloth.
Step Two: Buff the Clubheads
The next step is to gently buff the clubheads with the same soft cloth (without the polish) in a circular motion.
If your clubs have a chrome finish, make sure to use a chrome-specific polish to make them shine.
Step Three: Wipe the Surface of the Clubs to Remove Excess Polish
When you are done applying the polish buffing using a soft cloth, wipe the clubs to remove any excess polish.
This will leave your clubs looking shiny, similar to the state you bought them in.
Keep in mind that caring for and maintaining your golf clubs is crucial for their longevity as well as your performance.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How often should I clean my clubs?
How often you clean your clubs will depend largely on how often you play on the course.
Generally, you should clean them on a regular basis.
Here are a few indicators or guidelines on how often you should clean your clubs:
After every round do a minor cleanup using a soft towel or a damp cloth to remove grass, dirt, and debris.
For debris, use a dry brush to remove dirt that builds up in the grooves.
Do a clean up after muddy or wet conditions. Moisture and mud can cause damage and rust in your clubs.
So, you should remove them immediately after the round and even throughout the round.
Besides the above, you should do regular monthly cleanup.
Once a month take time to inspect your clubs for any dirt, wear, or damage and give them a thorough cleanup.
Some of the things you need to do have been covered by the step-by-step guide on how to clean golf clubs.
What are some of the things that I should avoid while cleaning my golf clubs?
We have shared several tips on how to clean golf clubs, but there are a few things that you need to be careful about.
Here are the key ones:
– Do use wire brushes or abrasive pads. Doing so, you risk scratching the clubface or even removing the protective coating.
That is why we recommend that you use a soft brush like a toothbrush to scrub stuck-on debris.
A dedicated golf club brush will do a better job on this exercise. Just be sure to be gentle while cleaning.
– Don’t use harsh chemicals. While cleaning your clubs, don’t use household cleaners like bleach to clean the surface of your clubs.
Harsh cleaning detergent can damage the finish, causing your clubs to wear out much faster.
– Don’t soak for too long: Submerging the clubs for too long can also cause moisture to seep into other areas where it shouldn’t.
So, don’t leave the clubs soaked for hours. A few minutes are sufficient to get the dirt out.
– Don’t leave your clubs wet. At all times, make sure your clubs are clean and dry. Any excess moisture left behind can lead to rust.
It normally happens for steel shafts and clubheads.
– Don’t skip monthly maintenance. As mentioned earlier, perform monthly cleanup, especially when you are actively playing on the course.
Infrequent maintenance eventually leads to buildup of grime and dirt, which affects your performance and shortens the lifespan of your clubs.
How do I make my clubs look new again?
The best way to improve the look of your golf clubs is to do regular cleaning when in use.
If you have left them unclean for a while, you can soak them with lemon juice or vinegar before cleaning.
Doing this will knock all dirt and rust off and make the club look new again.
Final Thoughts
Keeping your golf equipment in good condition will have a significant influence on your performance. This is especially true for golf clubs.
Cleaning your golf clubs will not only make them look great (which boosts your confidence) but will also ensure better contact, more control, and improved accuracy.
A little secret to keep is that dirty clubs don’t play as well as clean clubs. They also tend to wear out faster.
So, if yours are dirty, make an effort to clean them. The good thing is that you won’t have to worry because you now know how to clean golf clubs.
